Today, I will remember that I have this old Space Marines gravis captain! I do have the other gravis captain from 8th edition that I think was also for my Imperial Fists, then I remember Tor. As I mentioned in my first post, there are a lot of kits to build, this being the first retrieved from the box! I still *need* to get the bolt rifle gravis captain at some point… maybe.
I seem to have various captains for my other space marines armies, so maybe this is the start of a small kill team? Maybe this is the beginning of my custom chapter, finally? I’ve always wanted to do a custom chapter, but honestly have no idea where to start! White Scars successor? Space Wolves successor? Iron Hands or Salamanders successor? Anyway, it’s something to mull over as I build this kit up!
Having finished the build, I am coming back at this point to add that the build order on the instructions seem off. It says add the head/ helmet in the last stage – it is just about possible. I did notice the cowl part of the plastic warped a bit when adding the full helmet. As a result of this, I ended up chopping a bit of the neck off – this probably would be ok if you weren’t painting it in a sub-assembly. I would suggest holding the two torso halves together and dry fitting the head of choice, before proceeding! However, I will be doing sub-assemblies & I am concerned about the paint being scraped off the top of the head!
Building the gravis captain…
We are going to start by building his torso and then attach the legs, which I have pictured below. Whilst I am de-seaming parts & gluing them together, I have to mull over the weapon options! This kit gives us a power sword, a rather large chainsword or a powerfist. I personally like the idea of giving him the Teeth of Terra, so that is where I will probably go.
So here he is looking somewhat resplendent with his legs, torso and no head – you’ll see I have built his bulletstorm gauntlet. Just to forewarn you, I do tend to paint backpacks separately, so the final picture it will be blutacced. I see the next parts include a blank shoulder pad for the chapter, very nice, especially if you have custom ones.
For my space marines gravis captain, I think we shall be using a transfer, rather than moulded shoulder pad. We’ve attached the left arm & most likely the chainsword arm to our gravis captain. I will be painting his face separately, so I shall probably leave that on the sprue, maybe blutac in another one for a photo. I also considered painting his cloak separately, however, it does attach to his right shoulder pad.
The completed captain!
Our finished space marines gravis captain is the featured image and as you can see, we went with the chainsword option. No doubt, the other arms will be used elsewhere. We have put a temporary different head in place & blutacced him to his base for the photo. It’s good that there is an gravis captain kit with options! The main question I have is… what chapter will he be going into? Potentially Blood Angels, unless Dante decides to cross the rubicon primaris, otherwise our custom chapter!
At this point, I shall drop the old Newsletter Signup form & politely ask to consider subscribing! The plan is for a monthly roundup of posts & and my top 3 YouTube videos, along with any news/ giveaways! The format will probably be worked on the more I send out over time. I might send an occasional email that can’t wait until the end of the month, but I can’t foresee that happening often!
