Today, I will crack on with some Horus Heresy, in this case, an Imperial Fists tactical squad! Unfortunately, I have yet to come up with squad names, but I am working on them as time marches on!
I am going to give this squad a vexilla & nuncio-vox – I already have a “spare” with a vexilla, so the next squad will be missing that out. For this particular list, I’m running two squads in a land-raider each, although with a view to run them later as a squad of 20. Later, I am absolutely planning on making a big squad of 20 tactical marines – the question is, what mark armour?
I mention this list in a previous post which is an armoured spearhead and primarily tank-based. Any troops must ride in transports and you can upgrade rhinos to land-raiders! I thought about running purely tanks, but I do need some units to hold objectives.
The backpacks and left shoulder pads are not attached to these marines as you can see. The reason for that is that I built all of the pads a while ago and they are now in storage! As for the backpacks, I do prefer to paint those separately, as I find it easier to paint all of the shoulder pads with them detached.
My Imperial Fists tactical squad sergeant you can see above – they do look very strange without their shoulder pads! Honestly, I am looking at it and reconsidering the power-fist position, but that can wait. When I was starting this out, I wanted to give all marines the Forgeworld heads, however I’ve decided against it. This squad, the second squad and the heavy weapons squad will all remain beaky, after that, I may change them.
Tactical squad extras
As you see on these miniatures, I am attaching pouches and extra grenades where possible to add more visual interest. They will NOT be getting chain bayonets or regular bayonets, I wanted them as cheap as possible. I know in the future I will want to try Stone Gauntlet at some point, but that will require shields. LOTS OF SHIELDS.
No doubt you’ve already noticed they aren’t based at all. Honestly, I can’t quite figure out how I am going to do that! My 40k Imperial Fists are all based in city rubble but I have a Forge World Heresy praetor already finished! He does appear to be on some sandstone type basing, however I can always repaint it! My Iron Warriors are all based in muddy battlefields, so I know I don’t want to do that. Maybe some Siege of Terra type basing? I suppose urban rubble could also be that, but maybe some marble? It is something I am going to have to put more time into, as it needs to contrast the Imperial Fists.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you! Do consider subscribing to the newsletter below – it’s currently only a end of month wrap up of blog posts and top three YouTube videos. Once in a blue moon I will use it to let people know of major sites updates etc.
