I still remember when I was reading White Dwarf 153, my eyes fell on Ragnar Blackmanes Space Wolves army. If you are a long-time fan of Warhammer 40,000, you may remember this battle report, too! In fact, Games Workshop re-released the classic battle report here. The bright colours and array of miniatures really caught my eye, so much so the Space Wolves became my first army!
Ragnar Blackmane and friends
The army consisted of Ragnar Blackmane and his Wolf Guard, Ulrik the Slayer, Njal Stormcaller, Blood Claws, Grey Hunters and Long Fangs.
Ulrik the Slayer was the first character I ever painted and one I wish I could find! Ragnar Blackmane came after, followed by Njal Stormcaller, which I painted on holiday in France! I thought I had a picture of Ragnar on my Instagram, but I was wrong! In fact, I wrote about and featured some of them in an ancient post I recently imported to this site!
I collected the rest of this army in metal and one more of each again in plastic. Unfortunately, whilst I finished the metal minis, I only managed the base coats of the plastic marines. Whilst packing up the house, I stumbled over a few more of the old army and pondered what to do with them. Recently, a tweet from Tom Egan had me thinking.
Half thinking of doing an old school 2nd Edition Warhammer 40K Army when I get home. I recall seeing this Space Wolves in a White Dwarf years ago and was just in awe of it. Still am - love it’s character, composition and size. Still doable I think? #WarhammerCommunity #WH40K

Space Wolves army
So whilst I am currently unable to work on them at all, it IS going to give me a great project to work on. I am giving myself plenty of projects to work on once I have moved in!
The old miniatures will be stripped, although I need to consider Ragnar and Njal. They aren’t in the best state, but they still look good! As they are my last two remaining original characters, I suspect I shall keep them and locate some replacements!
So to clarify, I have lead & plastic Blood Claws, Grey Hunters & Long Fangs to strip! I am going to concentrate on the lead miniatures first, however!
I think this will be the opportunity I want to do snow bases, unless the call of Goblin Green comes! Thinking of re-painting Ragnar Blackmanes Space Wolves army has really got me thinking!!
We are probably at least three months away from getting to a new place, and that’s the minimum! So, if you want to see how this plays out, sign up to the Newsletter!
