In this post, we go over an Iron Warriors terminators commission...

Commission Painting – Iron Warriors Terminators

This commission project was for Warhammer 40k Iron Warriors terminators, painted to a high table-top standard. The goal was to deliver  quality painted Chaos Terminators with hand-painted hazard stripes for a unique tabletop-ready force.

The Brief

  • Game/System: Warhammer 40K
  • Faction/Army: Iron Warriors
  • Scale: 32mm
  • Model Count: 5
  • Painting Standard: High Tabletop
  • Special Requests: No blood, minimal wear

Pre-Paint Preparation

The models were cleaned, assembled, and primed using Chaos Black primer. The kits went together well with no need for gap filling etc!

Painting Process

Base Colors & Blocking In

I painted the armour with a base coat of Games Workshop Iron Warriors mixed with some Vallejo Metal Colour (VMC) Exhaust Manifold. The VMC helped to thin the paint without separating the pigment.

Trim was blocked in with Pro-Acryl Bronze and the either Vallejo Model Colour Dark Grey (or German Grey) was used to paint the undersuit.

I began painting the stripes with a base of GW Scrag Brown, followed by GW Averland Sunset and I tidied up with some VMC Black!

Layering & Highlights

I went and added refined shadows with Nuln Oil and Black Templars contrast paint followed by adding highlights using GW Ironbreaker and VMC Pale Burnt Metal.

I glazed some P3 Sulfuric Yellow and then some GW Ushabti Bone over the yellow parts of the stripes. When highlighting the black parts of the stripes, I used a progression of : GW Incubi Darkness, GW Dark Reaper and a tickle of GW Thunderhawk Blue!

Details & Effects

The client requested red plasma for any of that sort of weaponry. I went with red lenses and also red fabrics where they were needed. I painted some light weathering on top of  the hazard stripes, using VMC black and Ice Yellow.

Basing & Final Touches

I applied basing materials such as AK Interactive Dark Earth & Muddy Ground to give the effect of a muddy battlefield / trench-type area. To bed the miniatures into the base and make them look like they belonged, I painted some of the mud over lower foot. I personally like to do this because otherwise it just looks like you have a character never having walked a step on the planet!

Iron Warriors Terminators Final Showcase

Here’s the completed commission, photographed in a neutral lightbox. I have plans in the future to get an array of terrain to take more  story-focussed images – but we shall have to wait a bit for that!

The completed chaos terminator miniatures were shipped safely to the client. Feedback from the client:

What did you like most about the commission process? The interactive process of choosing styles and colours. Updates after days painting is done. What can be improved in the commission painting service? Privacy of the comission page. I can see comissions not my own and I assume they can see mine. Not major.
