So, the time of the Age of Sigmar Battleforces is here! We already checked out the Warhammer 40k battleforces over here! We have four battleforces to look at, so without wasting your time, let’s get to it!
Age of Sigmar Battleforces Introduction
The Age of Sigmar has four Battleforces coming out in time for Christmas; are you interested in any of these? Games Workshop is releasing the Seraphon, Ossiarch Bonereapers, Soulblight Gravelords and the Slaves to Darkness! This breaks down to one Order, two Death, and one Chaos battleforces.
We shall look at them more in-depth, but I’ve thrown them into a random list. Three are hovering around the high 900 points, whilst the Bonereapers are well over at 1240 points! The points are very rough, and no doubt there will be changes in points as time passes, but to get us started, we’ll look at them from the lowest points in the box to the highest!
- Seraphon 950
- Slaves to Darkness 960
- Soulblight Gravelords 990
- Ossiarch Bonereapers 1240
Primordial Starhost
Lizard wizard time! Have you always wanted an army consisting of lizards riding dinosaurs? If so, then this could be the army for you! I’ve been tempted by them several times, as they have some fantastic-looking miniatures. Hypothetically, I would be very tempted to paint them as the Starborne because have you seen their paint scheme?!
Let’s see what you can get if you purchase this Battleforce! To begin with, you get the Slann Starmaster, followed by 10 Saurus warriors and three tough Kroxigor. You will also get three Aggradon Lancers and a Warcry Warband, the Hunters of Huanchi. I should mention that the Kroxigor can also be built as Kroxigor Warspawned. These create a list very close to 1000 points that you can use in Vanguard-level games!

Warhorde of Eternus
The Slaves to Darkness get one of the most tempting Age of Sigmar Battleforces in this set! The ‘story’ for this Battleforce is that Be’lakor has summonedd Eternus to lead a warband against Archaon. However, the Eternus kit can be made into a more generic Lord on Chaos Mount, so your warband doesn’t need to follow that narrative!! I did manage to get my hands on one of the old Start Collecting Slaves to Darkness, which may pair well with this Battleforce.
Let’s look at the contents of this box! As previously mentioned, you will get Eternus, Blade of the First Prince, which does have an alternate build. He leads three Ogroid Theridons, five Chaos Chosen, 10 Chaos Warriors and five Chaos Knights! This Battleforce comes in at 960 points, excellent for the Vanguard level games.

Vengorian Court
Skelly time! So, I think out of all of the Age of Sigmar Battleforces being released this Christmas, this one is definitely one of the most tempting. As you may know, I never fully got into Warhammer Fantasy Battles back in the day. I did start collecting some Chaos Warband miniatures and I did start a small Undead army.
Obviously, I purchased Nagash in his most powerful form, which I could use to lead this Battleforce!
If you were to buy this Battleforce, what would you get inside it? You will receive five Blood Knights, 20 Deathrattle Skeletons, 10 Dire Wolves and three Fell Bats. The dual-build kit of the Vengorian Lord leads this army! Unfortunately, I wasn’t entirely sold on this wave of miniatures, specifically the leaders. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what I don’t like about them. However, it’s a personal decision – I would love a classic skeleton & zombie-powered army led by necromancers!

Praetorian Spearhead
The Ossiarch Bonereapers roll in as the second Death army that gets a Battleforce!
What’s in the last of the Age of Sigmar Battleforces box sets? You will get a core of 20 Mortek Guard and five Kavalos Death Riders. Four Morghast Archai will be adding some damage with a Gothizzar Harvester. Leading these is a Liege Kavalos, which can also build an Arch-Kavalos Zandtos, which is only 10 points more than the base option. However, that being said, this Battleforce is coming in at 1240 points, which is by far the most amount of points you’ll get in any of the Age of Sigmar Battleforces!

So, as per my post on the Warhammer 40k Battleforces, this is based on last year’s Battleforce prices. As promised, I have come back and adjusted this year’s box price. There has “only” been a £5 increase for Age of Sigmar, so the savings percentage has only dropped between 1% & 3% across the releases.
The savings are similar to the 40k Battleforces, i.e. between 30% and 40%. The best savings and the most points in the box go to the Ossiarch Bonereapers with a 41% saving and 1240 points! I don’t quite know why there is such a disparity between this and the others, at least points-wise. My cynical mind says they need to shift stock – but maybe you can tell me? Are they a popular faction within the Age of Sigmar?
Battleforces Conclusion
That wraps up the Age of Sigmar Battleforces for 2023, so what are your thoughts? From what we are being offered, the one that interests me the most is the Slaves to Darkness, followed by the Seraphon and the Soulblight Gravelords. Strangely, I’ve never been entirely keen on the Ossiarch Bonereapers, so that rules them out, which is a shame as that is quite a saving.
Talking about SAVINGS, if you use my Element Games affiliate link by using the banner below, you can save even more money!
I wonder why we didn’t get a Destruction Battleforce to replace one of the two Death Battleforces. I would have probably enjoyed an Orruk Warclan or a Gloomspite Gitz offering.
